Kudos mainly attracts a young gay male crowd and is particularly popular with the capital’s Asian population. The open frontage encourages others in though, and particularly early in the evening the after-work crowd stops by. The vibe begins relaxed but the pace increases as the evening wears on and the music cranks up a notch as people arrive to enjoy a pre-club drink.

Downstairs, the atmosphere is cruisy as people enjoy the dance music, all set to huge screens and music videos on the wall. Again, there’s nothing unusual here, but the crowd seems to lap it up and there’s enough going on to keep everyone happy. The bar staff mirror the punters – they’re mostly young, cute and happy to be there.

1 of nine - Kick Off Meeting

Creative [SIN]ergy had its 1st kick off meeting for "1 of nine" on 27th June at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. "1 of 9" is a collaborative project between Musicians and Artist/ Designers.

"1 of nine" will be a fundraiser in aid of one of the breast cancer associations here in the UK. We have narrowed down to 3 charities and will be selecting 1 in due course.

Cancer Research UK
http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/

Breast Cancer Care
http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk/

Breast Cancer Campaign
http://www.breastcancercampaign.org/

The working title "Music in PINK" has been change to "1 of nine". The word "Pink" has many different connotations these days, we simply decide that "1 of nine" would be more of an appropriate title. As during the overall life expectancy of a women, 1 out of 9 may suffer from breast cancer. Also we have 9 musicians line up and paired with 9 designers/ artist. So the new title makes sense.

Suggested musicians involved:
1. Tan Shzr Ee - Accordionists
2. Yao Cong - Tuba Player
3. Grace Lee - Violinist
4. Shaun Ho - Violinist
5. Lim Juan -
Cellist
6. Song Ziliang - Pianist

Erika Tan exhibits in Yokohama, Japan

A Gift To Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling Erika Tan & Mio Shirai

BankART Studio NYK
3-9 Kaigan Dori,
Naka-ku
Yokohama, Japan
26.6.2009 - 2.8.2009 11:30-19:00

Private Viewing: 26th June, 19:00

Following on from her 2 month residency last year in BankART, Yokohama, Erika Tan will be showing some of the works made while in Japan in BankART gallery spaces. The first The Syntactical Impossibility of Approaching with a Pure Heart, a large scale work which is a meditation on a-priori knowledge, the encounters with the unexpected and the inevitable impossibilities of reconciling representation, experience and expectation. Mount Fuji or Fuji-san comes to play a central role in this work, and the title refers in part to the mythological tale of the fate of faith-less or unworthy pilgrims. The work consists of 13 video works, several hundred donated drawn images, compiled or composite Mount Fuji's*, and other elements such as topological type puzzles, viewing mechanisms, and LED signs.

Image: Erika Tan, from 'Made in Japan': 'Ghost in the Machine', 2008

The second work, The Ghost in the Machine has a more direct reference to Yokohama itself and her personal experiences of physically navigating the city at night, alone. Witnessed but not watched, hearing but not listening, occasionally a missed step, a siren in the distance, a blink of an eye disrupts the seemingly never ending loops of video that make up the work. For this work she had the pleasure of working with six dance students from the Kazuo Ohno school whose performances of various forms of engagement make up the mainstay of the work.

A third work, Ibn Battuta's Worries takes the form of a single channel travelogue. This carries on from Shot Through (http://www.luxonline.org.uk/artists/erika_tan/shot_through.html) a previous travelogue work, which interrogated the writings of philosophers and theorists such as Derrida, Barthe, Sontag and Cristeva who made short visits to China and followed up with written interpretations, theorising and ponderings which now circulate and form part of China's global textual patina. Ibn Battuta's Worries takes a first person account of his travels to the 'east'. A 14th century Moroccan traveller, his journeys or at least the accounts of them took him as far as China and were eventually written up in the Rihla also titled A Gift To Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling. It is doubtful if he ever got to Japan, but if he had, this might have been his story. Interwoven with her own personal accounts, the work is a mixture of factual re-telling, fantastic imaginings and manipulated imagery. This work is still in production and will be completed later this year.
A Gift To Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling, was also exhibited at NGCA, Sunderland, UK.

A6 /future/

Creative [SIN]ergy presents
A6 /future/

London Design Festival, 19 Sept – 27 Sept 2009

/What is A6/ A6 exists to promote and celebrate contemporary illustration culture, crossbreed emerging talents from the east and the west and inspire nippy collaboration among talents. A6 is the standard size of a postcard, and will be our official canvas where talents fuse ideas into superb illustration works. With an ambition of having prospective ongoing events, A6 hopes to always serve as a platform where young illustrators of both countries could perpetually join forces in full swing.

/Future/ When it comes to future, it’s no longer about the latest invention, but the latest way to counter the problem our previous inventions have brought about. Predictions about the future that deal with space travels and mega skyscrapers are all very interesting, but the predictions that really hit home and that we can judge most accurately are those that deal with how we could improve our everyday lives; how we eat, where we live, how we work, and how we play. Will our living rooms be multi-media lairs? Will our house be built out of plastic? Will we still cook our own food? How can we ask our pet to get a pint of milk from the convenience store? What will we do for fun?

A6 /Future/ invites the illustrators to think of a question they would ask the future? Express it by illustrating them on half an A6 template, after which post them to another illustrator who will then think of a possible answer to that question. Like wise, the same illustrator will have to think of an answer for a question in which another illustrator has posted to him/her. Illustrators are encouraged to be imaginative rather than be practical in these processes.
The result would be a showcase of an artistic installation of all the postcards at a central London venue during London Design Festival 2009. (Location tbc)
For more information on /A6/ Future please contact:

/How it works/ Creative [SIN]ergy proposes to team up with Young Creative Network [UK] to select a pool of 20 illustrators, 10 from both countries and they could work in pairs. Each illustrator will be sent a starter’s pack.

Proposed deadline for confirmation of participation from illustrators: 1 July 2009

Every illustrator will get 3 weeks to draw half an A6 postcard, digitally or manually. At due course, he/she will be informed of the address of their recipient and the postcard has to be mailed out by post within a week. In any case where dateline couldn’t be met, the swap would be done online.

Proposed deadline of first swap : 27 July 2009

Once any illustrator receives the half done postcard, he/she could then begin working on the other side, which is to illustrate a solution which he/she thinks would solve that question brilliantly. This process will take another 3 weeks.

Proposed deadline of second swap : 27 August 2009

Upon completion, the postcard could be handed over to the representatives and every illustrators will be invited to attend the showcase during London Design Festival 2009. These postcards will be copyright registered to ensure the design is only sold or auction off in this one-off event with proceeds going to a charity. Reprints of the postcards could be sold during the event with proceeds going to help raise additional funds for charity or help offset the cost of the showcase. If sponsorship is available we could even give these postcards out for free. Please note, we won’t offer remuneration to the illustrators but we offer to print all contact info and biography of the illustrators at the back of the reprinted postcards of their creation. Sponsor logos where possible will also appear on the back of these postcards.

Proposed deadline of final submission : 1 September 2009

Exhibition date : within 19 - 27 September 2009

/Possible tie-in/Future development/ We will aim to move the same installation back to Singapore for exhibits during Singapore Design Festival 2009 and a possible collaboration with Organisation of Illustrattors Council (OIC) as an extension to their showcase.

Our theme A6 /future/ is also in-sync with the theme of SDF 2009 which is “Design 2050” that deals greatly with how life can be different in the future, economically-socially and environmentally. SDF 2009 takes place during 20 -30 Nov 2009.

SHOWCASE: Mona Choo

Although Mona was enrolled in a degree course in Graphic Design and Illustration at Kingston University, it was in the print studio that she spent most of her time, having fallen in love with printmaking during her art foundation year.

After graduation Mona returned to Singapore in 1994, somewhat reluctantly, to pursue a career. Without setting out to do so, she inadvertently travelled down two parallel paths, that of advertising/design, and fine art. With a portfolio full of artist prints, Mona managed to secure her first job in an animation company, while at the same time piquing the interest of some local art galleries.

Within two years, Mona went on to become a graphic designer in Singapore's top advertising agency at the time, Batey Advertising. While she was kept busy working on a client list that included Sony, Singapore Airlines, Raffles Hotel and the United Overseas Bank, Mona also managed to secure gallery representation and exhibitions with some of Singapore's more edgy contemporary art galleries, as well as exhibitions in the UK.
Her art career during these formative years culminated in the purchasing of her work by the Singapore Art Museum for their permanent collection, and the United Overseas Bank (UOB) of Singapore for their private collection. Mona was awarded the Highly Commended Award for the 16th UOB Painting of the Year Competition for a series of screen prints completed in college. Her work has also been acquired by private collectors from around the world.
Mona's love for printmaking motivated her to return to London as often as possible to create prints, since facilities were not readily available in Singapore. As a result, in 1999, the Director of the London Print Studio offered Mona an apprenticeship. Armed with a grant from the National Arts Council of Singapore, Mona spent six months training and working at the LPS.

In the ensuing years, Mona took time off creating art in order to experiment with another creative pursuit, one that had a more commercial aspect. For the next five years, Mona managed to successfully start her own greeting card business in Australia and her handmade and printed designs were sold nationwide.

Mona returned to full time art practice only in 2007. Since then, she has had a number of successes at international juried art competitions, resulting in three group shows in New York as well as securing representation with a Chelsea art gallery in New York. She has also secured representation in Singapore, and her work was shown in ArtSingapore 2008.

Mona is currently the International Print Artist in Residence at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This is her first residency.

Short Circuit - London [filmmakers biography + statements]

Hong Khaou / Summer
Hong Khaou is Hokkien Chinese, he worked in Singapore for 4 months with Glen Goei on Forever Fever as a director’s assistant. He studied fine art and eventually settled for film. He currently works for a film distribution company that has distributed three Singaporean films, Be With Me by Eric Khoo, 15 & 4:30 by Royston Tan. He is currently adapting one of his plays into a feature film.

Filmography:
2004 - ‘Waiting For Movement’ – short film which won the Film London Digital Pulse Award. It is currently touring festivals.

2006 - ‘Summer’ – Short film which won the funding from Tower Hamlets and Hackney Film Award

Rae Lyn Lee / Lola
Rae Lyn Lee started working professionally as an in-house editorial photographer for Singapore Press Holdings Magazines, straight after graduating from Temasek Polytechnic Design School. Having shot for titles such as Her World, Shape and ICON magazine for over a year, she moved on to a lucrative career in commercial stills photography and was inducted into the Professional Photographers Association of Singapore. However, she decided to take a hiatus from the still photography industry to pursue her passion for Cinema. She is currently on an MDA scholarship pursuing a Masters in Filmmaking at The London Film School.

Charmaine Wong / Pink IC
Charmaine Wong’s Pink IC premiered at the inaugural Short Circuit in 2006.

Her vision is this: there will come a day where Singapore will have its own “Queer Cinema” where queer filmmakers or filmmakers dealing with queer issues are able to share ideas, resources and showcase their films locally and internationally.

In the meantime, she is paying her dues as a writer/producer for a production house, making safety videos on how not to board a vessel.

Director's Statement:
The Time Asia Magazine interview was significant because PM Goh mentioned it voluntarily or at least it seemed so. To many, including myself, it was an official acknowledgment of Singapore’s gay population.

I started to wonder if in the process of re-defining who we are, would the gay population—it’s hopes, dreams and woes—form part of the picture? Also, when he said “gay”, was he referring to the full spectrum of the rainbow or more vocal and visible groups within the gay population?

This brings us to another issue—the lack of voices from the queer female population.

To this end, Pink IC offers a glimpse into the lives of 5 queer female Singaporeans, it is a platform for them to voice out; tell others what it means for them to be queer, female and Singaporean.

Tan Wei Keong / White
Born in 1984 in Singapore, Wei Keong’s first animated short film White was awarded Special Achievement Award at the 20th Singapore International Film Festival. He had previously received a Gold Award at the 34th Singapore Youth Festival for sculpture design. Wei Keong has also freelanced as a cartoonist for the local papers and, being an animation enthusiast, assisted at Animation Nation, Siggraph and Siggraph Asia. Granted the Media Education Scholarship by the Media Development Authority of Singapore, he is currently in his senior year at Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design and Media, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Animation. His latest work, Hush Baby(2009), which incorporates a gamut of techniques such as pixilation, stop motion, 2D drawing and 3D modelling, marks his second animated short film effort.

Director's Statement:
Would you much rather be someone else?

Victric Thng / Locust
Victric Thng is known for creating atmospheric and dreamlike short films. His works have traveled extensively to film festivals and won many short film awards. He was named as one of the next new wave of filmmakers in Singapore.

Director's Statement:
“Locust” was shot during a holiday trip to Hong Kong in 2003. The images I captured randomly inspired me to do a something about it. Upon returning to Singapore, I sat down one afternoon and wrote the script within an hour and the film was edited in 1 day. In retrospect, there was not much of a thinking process, everything was done very spontaneously and very quickly. In all honesty, this is the film that started my affair with filmmaking.

Eva Tang / Don't Say Farewell Again
Eva had a career as a journalist for Singapore's major Chinese newspapers, before headed to England to study filmmaking. Don’t Say Farewell Again was a film she made while she was at the National Film and Television School.

Brian Gothong Tan /Asian Girls Vol 2 (Memoirs of a Geisha)
Brian Gothong Tan is perhaps one of the most exciting and prolific multimedia artists that has emerged from Singapore in recent years. Trained in Fine Arts, Multimedia and Animation at the California Institute of Arts under the NAC-Shell Arts scholarship, Brian's works are renowned for their icy, high gloss finish subverted by play and parody.

Yeo Lee Nah / Crocodile Journals
Yeo Lee Nah is a performer at heart, whose love for performance found its channel in filmmaking, animation and design. Having studied at the California Institute of the Arts, she received a Bachelor’s in Scene Design and a Master’s in Experimental Animation.

Basically, she just wants to have fun making work that people can relate to.

Director's Statement:
This film was inspired by the late Qiu Miao Jin, the author of a semi-autobiographic novel “Er Yu Shou Ji”. As I have heard, she tragically ended her own life shortly after the publication. Intrigued by the stories within and without the novel, I wanted to use the subtleties of human/inhuman gestures to highlight the ways we deal with everyday communication. And how that could inadvertently affect all of us on an emotional and psychological level.

At the same, I had injected my own sense of loss and displacement while making the film. It is thus a very personal film as well.

But this film is not about the loss of hope, rather it is an opportunity to say to some amongst us, to take heart, for you are not alone.

Ezzam Rahman and Ghazi Alqudcy / Miss A Shot
The duo, Ezzam Rahman and Ghazi Alqudcy have been collaborating and partners in crime in telling and sharing stories of their own personal encounters and experiences. Miss A Shot is one of their own interpretations from similar encounters that they had.

Michael Tay / Wet Season
Born 21st July 1983, Singapore, Michael graduated from the School of Film, Sound and Video at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2003, where he learnt about screenwriting, editing and cinematography. He was the cinematographer for the award-winning student short film, Cell 118, before he pursued his degree in the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University. In 2005, he began actively making short films and has made five short films to date. His films are often shot on a shoe-string budget and his crew has never included more than five people. He usually multi-tasks in his production and Wet Season marks his first attempt at casting and directing himself in front of the camera.

Director's Statement:
When I first set out to make this short, it wasn’t meant to be a fully animated 6 minute short film. The original story of Wet Season was a 15 page script about a guy living in a fast paced world who dreams of sperms whenever he thinks of the girl of his dreams and is haunted at the same time by visions of his dead father in the form of a skeleton.

I was halfway through the second rewrite of the script that I decided to scrap the whole idea because I felt it wasn’t honest enough. If this is going to be a tribute to my dad, it better be just about my dad and my dad alone. So I deleted the entire 15 pages of material and just start writing the script in the most primitive method I know. In the form of a letter to my dad.

That letter which I wrote in Chinese over the course of nearly a week became the narration for “Wet Season”. And that letter went through many rewrites even till post production stage which became really scary for me then because I never take rewrites this far. Ultimately, I guess the effort is well paid off and this final output really feels like a tribute to my dad.

Boo Junfeng / Katong Fugue
Boo Junfeng is one of the most prolific short film filmmakers from Singapore in recent years. Since 2005, his films have received several awards at the Singapore International Film Festival, including all four of the main accolades: Best Film, Best Director, Special Jury Prize and Special Achievement Award.

His most recent short film ‘Tanjong Rhu’ was selected at the Panorama section of the 59th Berlin Film Festival. He is currently working on his feature-length debut with Zhao Wei Films, a production company helmed by internationally-acclaimed Singaporean director-producer Eric Khoo.

Director's Statement:
I was deeply moved by Alfian’s text in Katong Fugue when I saw Landmarks: Asian Boys Volume 2 in 2004. It was an experience that I will probably never forget. Besides realising as a 20-year-old that I wasn’t alone in the struggle to come out, I also realized for the first time the possibility of affecting someone else so deeply with good storytelling. I wanted to share that experience with a wider audience and was very glad when Alfian allowed me to complement his words with images.

Loo Zihan / Autopsy
Touted to be one of Singapore’s boldest filmmakers, Zihan is completing his BFA in Digital Filmmaking at the Nanyang Technological University’s School of Art Design and Media.

Director's Statement:
AUTOPSY is a personal documentary project. I have been very open about my films and the nature of them with my parents, and we had many conversations about it. This project serves to document my mother’s point of view, coming to terms with who her son is, and how she copes
with it.

Royston Tan / Monkey Love
Known for his distinctive cinematic style, Royston has received over 41 international and local film awards for both his feature and short films, notably 15 and Sons. He has been recognized in Asia with several awards including ASEAN Director of the Year (2001), Young Artist of the Year (2002) by the National Arts Council in Singapore and in 2003, Netpac Jury has recognized him as the Asia Most Promising Talents. In 2004, Royston Tan was cited as a “Top 20 Asian Heroes” by Time Magazine.

Music in PINK pre kick off meeting

creative [SIN]ergy recently had our 1st brainstorm meeting for "Music in PINK" on 4th June. The tentative dates that might work for a 2/3-hour afternoon recital in possibly an "urban" venue on the possible following dates 3, 10 or 17 October, pending on participant's and venue's availability.

Our focus of the programme will be coming up with items/ performances that are cross-disciplinary with the common theme of Breast Cancer Awareness. Where the musicians and the artists could pair/triple up to work together to come up with an item/ performances. The music involved could be classical, ethnic or improvised depending on the concept behind the idea and also the musician whom the artist is working with.

Some of the ideas we came up with were:
- Using pre-composed Western Classical music to inspire/inform the other artform. Eg. Yoyo Ma playing the Bach Cello Suites but each was accompanied by either silent film, a poem, a painting etc.

- If a concrete piece of work is created for the performance, like an artpiece or an architecture drawing/ model, this could be auctioned off at the end. These artworks can be derived or inspired by music provided by our musicians or just from the theme of Breast Cancer Awareness.

- It would be interesting to see if it might be possible to have the art piece or architecture created live as the music is being played. This music may be improvised (interesting to see the 2 artists playing off each other's artistic ideas!) or pre-composed.

- Having a film made about breast cancer/breast cancer survivors etc. and have the music improvised to it. (this might be good for a finale?)

- A mix tape with messages about Breast Cancer (eg. interviewing breast cancer survivors or poem written by our writers) and having this looped or playing in between the pieces.

We suggested that a working method might be for all of us to meet up and chat/brainstorm/play/ workshop together so that we can get a feel for each other's working styles and ideas and perhaps we might then decide the groupings, pairings. If we have enough time we might do
more than one grouping for some people ie they are not only in just one item. Therefore, we would like to ask the artists and musicians involved to meet for a 2-hour rehearsal at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Moorgate/Barbican tube) on 27th June 4-6pm.

Please bear in mind that everything is fluid at the moment. It all depends on who you pair up with and what each participant brings to the table.

Suggested musicians involved:
1. Tan Shzr Ee - erhu, piano, accordion, japanese taiko etc.
2. Melvin Tan - tenor
3. Grace Lee - violin
4. Shaun Ho - violin
5. Lim Juan - cello
