On Tuesday 23rd  October, the Royal Academy of Arts will present an evening lecture from WOHA, Singapore based architecture practice.

Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, founders of Singapore practice WOHA, present their concept of ‘Breathing Architecture’ through a wide range of projects – from a single storey resort in Bali to a 60-storey housing project for 20,000 people in Mumbai, and a speculative city of 5 million on just 45 square kilometres – which respond to issues of urbanisation, density, sustainability and climate in Asia and the tropics.

Clara Yee is a student of the universe first year stuck forever a quest for knowledge. She was awarded the Shooting Gallery Prize, Best Illustration Student in Temasek Polytechnic (Visual Communication) and is current a Graphic Design student at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

She had two collaborative exhibitions in Singapore and a wall mural in a paper factory. Illustration is the love of her life and she has had an internship at Alexandra McQueen illustrating prints. She is not fickle-minded, she just has a nettlesome habit of seeing virtue in every argument.

Clara is also the 642th dwarf planet discovered to orbit the sun.

2012 will bring an exciting line-up of events and activities, with the return of [SIN]efest (UK largest Singapore Film Festival) and the ever popular PROJECT: slingSHORT. We will also be announcing our first ever Creative [SIN]ergy Grant for the London Design Festival 2012.

GASPP Is Coming To Town

GASPP is coming to town!

Join us for the launch of GASPP at Gay's the Word bookshop, hosted by Creative [SIN]ergy – an evening of wine and selected readings from GASPP: a Gay Anthology of Singapore Poetry and Prose by editor and writer, Ng Yi-Sheng.

GASPP is Singapore’s first anthology of writers who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and otherwise queer. It’s the combined work of 35 authors, translators and editors, who’ve contributed poetry, short fiction, memoirs, essays and experimental writing in English, Mandarin and Malay.

Re-Live Singapore in London

The Singapore International Foundation (SIF) is hosting a by-invitation event in London for former foreign residents of Singapore, for them to re-live their memories of Singapore, and to gather with those like them who have lived part of their lives in Singapore. We also welcome other foreigners who are living in the UK who have not had the chance to experience Singapore living, to join the event and have a glimpse of Singapore through the eyes of foreigners. Creative [SIN]ergy team 2011

Brian Tan a native child of the tiny tropical island of Singapore, went to the United States to pursue a Masters of Interior Architecture from the world-renowned Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence. He then spent two years in New York City as a visual merchandiser for Hennes & Mauritz AB, better known as H&M, where he was instrumental in creating vivid brand experiences in line with H&M's seasonal campaign.

Brian made the trans-Atlantic leap from New York to London in 2005, carrying out his current role as an Event designer at Imagination Ltd. One of the world's largest and most highly regarded design and communications consultancies, which has come in 1st for 6 conservative years in DesignWeek Top 100 design groups.

During his time at Imagination, Brian was selected by C&IT (Conference & Incentive Travel) magazine, as one of the 35 future leaders of the events industry from the country's most profitable and creative event agencies. He was published in The A List, a 32-page glossy supplement published in the April 2009 edition of C&IT. This supplement shines the spotlight on the future leaders of the events industry. He was also selected as a Judge at the D&AD 29th Global Student Awards 2007 in London.
In his early formative years back in Singapore, Brian was an assistant choreographer in the annual Singapore National Day Parade (Ministry of Education Contingent) in 1998 and 1999. The mass display was performed live to an audience of 55,000 people at the Singapore National Stadium and was also televised nationwide simultaneously.

Prior to that, Brian graduated with a Diploma in Interior Architecture and Design in 1997 from Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore). In 1996, he was elected President of the Design Studies Club, where he received a Certificate of Merit in 1997 for his efforts in the Design Studies Club. He was also Valedictorian at the School of Design ceremony in 1997. His other credits include being a semi-finalist at ASPAT Manila 1996 and a finalist in the SFIC furniture design competition in 1995, where his furniture design creation was featured in ID magazine that year.

Featuring: Creative [SIN}ergy member Erika Tan and Anita di Bianco, Aoife Collins, Trong G. Nguyen, Kate Pickering,Tintin Wulia with Performances by Lynn Lu, and Matthew MacKisack with Jeffrey Baker.

A low, indistinct and continuous sound, murmuring evokes the telling of stories or rumours that conjure powerful mental pictures. Murmuring otherwise connotes an endless babble of visual and verbal information - the point where language fails and meaning collapses.

Underscoring mechanisms of verbal imagination and visual enactment, linguistic rupture and the dissolution of the image, murmur explores fiction-making as a means by which to critically reorder the data of experience, frameworks of memory and limits of perception.

The artists in the exhibition have mined sources ranging from folklore and literature, to history and cultural theory, selectively reiterating and placing ownership over information, language and images that otherwise slip into an anonymous stream of murmuring. The artworks raise enquiries on existing social narratives, rationalities and systems of belief as the artists attempt to spin new fables from borrowed plots by deploying fiction as an evaluative strategy; a blank space from which to recall, to speak and to perform.

Featuring newly commissioned titles and works previously not shown in the UK, the project brings together video, installation and sculpture works by Anita di Bianco (US/DE), Aoife Collins (IE), Trong G. Nguyen (US), Kate Pickering (UK), Erika Tan (UK/SG), TinTin Wulia (ID) and live performances by Lynn Lu (UK/SG) and Matthew MacKisack (UK) due to take place on the First Thursday of December.

Erika Tan’s work has evolved from an interest in anthropology and the moving image. Her work is often informed by specific cultural, geographical or physical contexts; exploring different media to create situations that excite, provoke, question, confront and invite comments from the audience.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is returning to London after nearly two decades (19 years) since it first performed in London at the Barbican Centre. When it gives the concert at the Royal Festival Hall on 11 October 2010, the 97-strong SSO will be joined by renowned British pianist Stephen Hough. The orchstra will be perroming under the baton of award-winning Conductor and Music Director of the SSO, Maestro Lan Shui.

The programme for the evening at the Royal Festival Hall will feature Debussy - La Mer (23') - Mendelssohn - Piano Concerto No.1 in G minor, Op. 25 (21') - Rachmaninov - The Isle of the Dead, Op.29 (20') - and Zhou Long - The Rhyme of Taigu (12').

Since its founding in the mid-1970s, the 31-year old SSO has performed in more than 50 cities around the world and won numerous international accolades.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra @ Royal Festival Hall on 11th October

Singapore Symphony Orchestra will make its long-awaited debut at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall on 11th October.

Led by Music Director Lan Shui, the orchestra will be joined by the celebrated pianist Stephen Hough for Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1. The exciting programme includes Debussy’s La Mer, Rachmaninov’s The Isle of the Dead and Zhou Long’s The Rhyme of Taigu.

Since assuming the position of Music Director in 1997, Lan Shui has brought the Singapore Symphony Orchestra to a high level of excellence and a rising international profile, through several international tours and recordings for the BIS and Avie labels. Over the last five years, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra has toured to the USA, France, Spain, China and Taiwan.

A highlight of the programme is Debussy’s La Mer, which, as the centrepiece of a maritime-themed CD released by BIS in 2007, received critical acclaim worldwide. BBC Music Magazine described their playing of this work on the disc as “an unequivocally world-class performance of Debussy’s masterpiece”.

ed by Rachmaninov’s Isle of the Dead, pervaded by the hypnotic rhythm of oars. Composed in the same decade as Debussy’s symphonic sketches, this sombre tone poem displays further facets of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra while sustaining an aqueous theme in its repertoire.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra supports Uniquely Singapore? a generi-City project

Dorcas Ng will be featured at Dreams London 2010

Creative [SIN]ergy member, Dorcas Ng will be featured at Dreams London 2010 from 31st August to 4th September at the Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street London EC1V 9LT.

Dorcas will be presenting, Pao & the balloon. 泡(pào) is a wedge head carrot with a bad attitude. His background is dubious, even he doubts his own existence. One day, 泡(pào) finds that a balloon has grown behind his head. 泡(pào) doesn't know it, but this marks the start of a change which is to affect him... in a way.

Dreams London 2010 is a group exhibition of 50 young designers and artists from 15 different countries, sharing the same dream to set up an exhibition, showing London how passion and belief can make something amazing happen. Innovative, interesting, mysterious and fun ideas involving 20+ different types of creativities, Dreams Exhibition provides a stage for these young creators to show their talent. Like a playground, like magic, and like dreams, anything can happen. At the end of the day, knowing how to dream is the most beautiful thing in the world.

Msxi Presented In London Group Show

Creative [SIN]ergy member, Msxi will be part of a group show, Summer Showcase 2010, organised by Candid Arts which runs from 13 - 18 July. The private view of the showcase is on 15th July.

Msxi will be showing works from her latest series, Ten Years Of Work For Every Minute On Stage, which was exhibited as her first solo exhibition, in Singapore in April this year.

'Ten Years Of Work For Every Minute On Stage' is an outright documentation of: failure, process, training, suffering, bruising, determination and a toast to “the beginner’s spirit”. Serving as a reminder that success in anything never comes easy. It is her privilege to be able to showcase this new series here in London.

AEP Fashion Workshop by creative [SIN]ergy

Creative [SIN]ergy organised a fashion workshop for AEP (Art Elective Programme) students visiting from Singapore. The workshop was held at Dragon Hall in Covent Garden on Saturday 19 June 2010. The group was a mix of 15 Secondary students from Cedar Girls and Tanjong Katong Girls.

The Fashion workshop was conducted by Fashion Designer and Creative [SIN]ergy member, Lilia Yip. She shared with the students first-hand experience of working as a fashion designer in the UK and introduce them to the ideas generation process. Engaging students in hands-on activities and discussion about the first stage of the design process which involves research and collation of inspiration and information.

Lilia started the workshop with a quick ice-breaker called Dress A Friend in Ten. The students were divided into groups and given ten minutes to select one person per group to dress up with materials and present their creation to the class. This was a good warm up and it got students acquainted with how materials work on the body, basic techniques of draping and how to generate ideas quickly.
This was followed by a well orchestrated presentation on What is fashion design? What are the fundamentals (such as form, colour and material) that every designer needs to decide upon? Where and how do designers get their inspiration and ideas?

The finally activity was called Idea Collage. The groups prepared beforehand, bringing to the workshop images they like from fashion designers, photographers, artists, musicians, images they have taken themselves. These images were from magazines, the internet, photocopied from books, film stills, photos, scraps of fabric or a particular button.
Using the images they had as well as ideas from the ice-breaker, each group brainstorm on a concept for one garment design showing the colour, form and materials they have decided on.
Creating a collage that will act as a mood board showing the colour, shape and material and overall concept for a garment and presented to the class for discussion.

This activity gave students a hands-on experience of how to research and edit their ideas. It also introduces students to the basic principles of fashion design, which are in essence art, cultural and social aesthetics with a human interaction and wearability function.

The workshop concluded with a discussion of the emergence of sustainable and ethical fashion.

MPC Digital in Soho will play host to ‘Urban Prairie’ an intuitive interactive art installation conceived and designed by Architecture firm in square lab and MPC Digital department. The project; developed in collaboration with existential ltd is for the London Festival of Architecture 2010 which runs around the capital June 19th – July 4th. The installation underlines the notion of bringing the inside out; whilst blurring the boundaries between architecture, interactive installation and art.

At its core; Urban Prairie is an experimental installation that illustrates the opportunity of merging the real world with the ever-increasing virtual environments we find ourselves living in. Through intelligent design and interventions, we aim to synchronize physical materials with real-time graphics in a bid to create one experience.

An array of optical sensors and arduino boards are used to capture and comprehend the movements of passers by in front of MPC London building at 127 Wardour St. This digital data is then translated into kinetic responses via a series of servos; creating the phenomenon of a sea of grass swaying in the breeze. The motion of the 'real' grass is in turn measured by our software and translated, after sufficient delay, to a virtual prairie on four 42" screens behind the 'real' grass.

The combined result is an interactive 'Urban Prairie" which passers by can interact with through their movements in space. By varying their speed and location in front of the windows, passers by can generate wind disturbance that travels from the ‘real’ grass to the virtual prairie seamlessly and eventually fading off into the horizon.

After the LFoA (www.lfa2010.org); the team plans to present the project in a variety of global locations.

AEP Talks Organised by Creative [SIN]ergy

Creative [SIN]ergy organised at talk for AEP (Art Elective Programme) students visiting from Singapore. These talks were held at Dragon Hall in Covent Garden on Saturday 12 June 2010. The group was a mix of 35 Art, Design & Technology and Literature students from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian.

Established Product Designer, Kok-Chian Leong gave a delightful presentation of his projects from Seymourpowell. Creative [SIN]ergy member Brian Tan was also presented at the talks.

The talks were an insight to the practical and real aspect of the creative industry from people who are currently in the creative industry in the UK. This included the sharing of experience and some samples of their work.
