A6 /future/

Creative [SIN]ergy presents
A6 /future/

London Design Festival, 19 Sept – 27 Sept 2009

/What is A6/ A6 exists to promote and celebrate contemporary illustration culture, crossbreed emerging talents from the east and the west and inspire nippy collaboration among talents. A6 is the standard size of a postcard, and will be our official canvas where talents fuse ideas into superb illustration works. With an ambition of having prospective ongoing events, A6 hopes to always serve as a platform where young illustrators of both countries could perpetually join forces in full swing.

/Future/ When it comes to future, it’s no longer about the latest invention, but the latest way to counter the problem our previous inventions have brought about. Predictions about the future that deal with space travels and mega skyscrapers are all very interesting, but the predictions that really hit home and that we can judge most accurately are those that deal with how we could improve our everyday lives; how we eat, where we live, how we work, and how we play. Will our living rooms be multi-media lairs? Will our house be built out of plastic? Will we still cook our own food? How can we ask our pet to get a pint of milk from the convenience store? What will we do for fun?

A6 /Future/ invites the illustrators to think of a question they would ask the future? Express it by illustrating them on half an A6 template, after which post them to another illustrator who will then think of a possible answer to that question. Like wise, the same illustrator will have to think of an answer for a question in which another illustrator has posted to him/her. Illustrators are encouraged to be imaginative rather than be practical in these processes.
The result would be a showcase of an artistic installation of all the postcards at a central London venue during London Design Festival 2009. (Location tbc)

/How it works/ Creative [SIN]ergy proposes to team up with Young Creative Network [UK] to select a pool of 20 illustrators, 10 from both countries and they could work in pairs. Each illustrator will be sent a starter’s pack.

Proposed deadline for confirmation of participation from illustrators: 1 July 2009

Every illustrator will get 3 weeks to draw half an A6 postcard, digitally or manually. At due course, he/she will be informed of the address of their recipient and the postcard has to be mailed out by post within a week. In any case where dateline couldn’t be met, the swap would be done online.

Proposed deadline of first swap : 27 July 2009

Once any illustrator receives the half done postcard, he/she could then begin working on the other side, which is to illustrate a solution which he/she thinks would solve that question brilliantly. This process will take another 3 weeks.

Proposed deadline of second swap : 27 August 2009

Upon completion, the postcard could be handed over to the representatives and every illustrators will be invited to attend the showcase during London Design Festival 2009. These postcards will be copyright registered to ensure the design is only sold or auction off in this one-off event with proceeds going to a charity. Reprints of the postcards could be sold during the event with proceeds going to help raise additional funds for charity or help offset the cost of the showcase. If sponsorship is available we could even give these postcards out for free. Please note, we won’t offer remuneration to the illustrators but we offer to print all contact info and biography of the illustrators at the back of the reprinted postcards of their creation. Sponsor logos where possible will also appear on the back of these postcards.

Proposed deadline of final submission : 1 September 2009

Exhibition date : within 19 - 27 September 2009

/Possible tie-in/Future development/ We will aim to move the same installation back to Singapore for exhibits during Singapore Design Festival 2009 and a possible collaboration with Organisation of Illustrattors Council (OIC) as an extension to their showcase.

Our theme A6 /future/ is also in-sync with the theme of SDF 2009 which is “Design 2050” that deals greatly with how life can be different in the future, economically-socially and environmentally. SDF 2009 takes place during 20 -30 Nov 2009.
