PROJECT: slingSHORT Was A Roaring Success

The 4th edition of PROJECT: slingSHORT held on Friday 26th February 2010 at the The Singapore High Commission in London was a roaring success. This screening was oversubscribed and tickets were sold out just 3 weeks after announcements. The evening screening was attended by 90 guest, the largest in attendance for a PROJECT: slingSHORT screening till date. This screening was graced by His Excellency, The Singapore High Commissioner to London, Mr Michael Teo and Mrs Teo.
During the pre-screening reception, the audience were treated to a gastronomic buffet dinner consisting of local Singaporean delights, courtesy of The Overseas Singaporean Unit and The Singapore High Commission in London.
PROJECT: slingSHORT was presented by Creative [SIN]ergy and curated by Eva Tang. Eva was selected to curate this edition from predecessor Victric Thng. Eva's selction of films deal with subject matters that are close to Singapore shorts: family, relationship, innocence lost and societal suppression. These Singapore short films have traveled to Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam and Oberhausen and have truly gained a wider visibility in the international film festival circuits in recent years. Eva has also curated a selction of filmmakers who have developed from making shorts to thier 1st features -- Ho Tzu Nyen, Boo Junfeng, Sanif Olek. She has also selected a selection of short films made by students: Kirsten Tan (NYU Tisch), Tan Shijie (Tisch Asia), He Shuming (LaSalle) & Tan Wei Keong (NTU). They are the up-and-coming talents who bring new inputs to the creative film scene.

The 5th edition of PROJECT: slingSHORT began with an opening speech by His Excellency, The Singapore High Commissioner to London, Mr Michael Teo. The screening started with National Day by He Shuming. Followed by à la folie (like crazy) by Sanif Olek and For Two by Tan Shijie. After the interval the screenings proceeded with Reflections by Ho Tzu Nyen, Hush Baby by Tan Wei Keong, Sink by Kirsten Tan and ended with Tanjong Rhu by Boo Junfeng. (Click here for film synopsis.)
From the oversubscribed and sold out screening, we were able to raise a total of £600.00 from the proceeds in aid of The Substation. The Substation is a non-profit organisation. Its mission is to support research and innovation in the arts by: nurturing and challenging Singapore artists, providing an open space for artistic experimentation, promoting interaction between diverse artists and audiences, facilitating critical dialogue in the arts and fostering regional and international arts networks. Funds received cover the costs of operating, developing programmes and producing events.

PROJECT: slingSHORT is an ongoing series of Singapore short films screening. The selection of short films for each series comes from an ensemble of new up and coming Singapore filmmakers and acts as a launch platform for complete unknown Singapore short filmmakers. A different Singapore short filmmaker curates each screening and selects the next curator from one of the filmmakers from the current screening.

The 5th edition of PROJECT: slingSHORT would not have been possible without the kind support of the Overseas Singapore Unit, Singapore High Commission in London, and Mindlab. Special thanks to the selected filmmakers, Creative [SIN]ergy team, Mission staff and last but not least, Eva Tang for all her curating efforts and for putting together such an amazing and diverse selection of films.
